The following types of corporate actions are available in Snowball:

  • Split
  • Merger
  • Spinoff

Split

A stock split is a multiple increase in the number of shares of a company in circulation with a proportional decrease in their value. At the same time, the company's capitalization remains unchanged.

💡
This action, unlike the other two, Snowball recommends adding if the company has had a split, so you can see the recommendation to add a split for an asset in your portfolio either on the Dashboard page or go to Portfolio → Corporate actions.

Keep in mind that if you don't add a split, your portfolio will have the old number of shares (before the split), but the current price of the asset will be adjusted for the split whether you added a split or not. Thus, you may receive incorrect analytical data for this asset.

If suddenly you don't see the recommendation to add a split, but you know it has occurred, you can add it on the Portfolio → Corporate actions → Add page.

Select a company, then set the date of the split (e.g. if the company's shares have increased 5 times since May 10, but they cost 5 times less, then the date of the split is May 9). Next, specify the split coefficient. For example: if the split was 4 to 1 (for every 1 share, you received 4 shares), then specify 4. Or, for example, in case of reverse split 0.5 to 1 (for every 2 shares you received 1 share (0.5*2)).

Merger

A merger in simple words is when one company merges into another company (can either just be a reorganization or become fully part of the new company). This action will not be recommended in Snowball either, so it also needs to be accounted for by the user themselves.

On the Portfolio page → Corporate actions → Add.

Select the company you have in your portfolio. Then you need to select the company that resulted from the Merger. And specify the ratio (e.g. 4 (for each share you got 4 shares) or 0.5 (for every 2 shares you got 1 share)).

Spinoff

A spinoff is a spinning off of part of a business into a new, separate company.

If a company in your portfolio has a spinoff, you must add this action yourself on the Portfolio → Corporate actions → Add page. Also, this action can be imported automatically via synchronization or with a report, only with IBKR broker.

Select the company, then select the date when it had a spinoff and specify how many shares you received due to the spinoff.
