Email auto-import keeps your portfolio up to date without manual uploads. Each portfolio gets its own email address: forward your broker's reports to it, and Snowball will import all trades and dividends automatically ✉️
This guide will walk you through the setup, you will learn how to:
- Get your portfolio's email address
- Set up forwarding in your mailbox
- Track imports and fix issues
- Manage, change or turn off email auto-import
💡 Email auto-import is available on Premium plans. If your subscription ends, addresses you already set up keep working, but you can't create a new one.
Before you start
- One broker per portfolio. Reports are imported in the format of the broker selected for the portfolio. If you have several brokers, create a separate portfolio for each.
- One source per portfolio. A portfolio can be updated either by email auto-import or by a connected brokerage account, not both.
- The report must be attached. Your broker's email must contain the report as a file in a format supported for this broker. Emails without a report are not imported.
- Use the web version of your mailbox on a computer. Forwarding rules can't be set up in most mobile mail apps.
Step 1. Get your portfolio's email address
- Select the portfolio and click Add → Import a spreadsheet on the top panel.
- Make sure the correct broker is selected at the top of the page.
- In the Automate report imports block, click Set up.
- Copy the address with the copy icon.
- Set up forwarding in your mailbox (Step 2), then return and click I'm done.
💡 Using the mobile app? Tap Send instructions to my email on the import screen. We'll send the portfolio's address and these steps to your account email, so you can finish the setup on a computer.
Step 2. Set up forwarding in your mailbox
Create a rule that forwards only your broker's emails to the portfolio's address. Filter by the broker's sender address, and if your mailbox allows it, by "has attachment". Don't forward your whole inbox.
Gmail
- Open Settings → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP and click Add a forwarding address.
- Enter the portfolio's address. Google may ask you to confirm it's you, then click Proceed.
- Gmail sends a confirmation email to the portfolio's address. We'll forward it to your account email within about 5 minutes.
- Open that email and click the confirmation link, or enter the code in Gmail settings.
- Create a filter: search for emails from your broker's address, click Create filter, select Forward it to and choose the portfolio's address.
Outlook.com / Hotmail
- Open Settings → Mail → Rules → Add new rule.
- Condition: From your broker's address.
- Action: Forward to the portfolio's address. Save the rule.
iCloud Mail
- Go to icloud.com/mail, click the settings icon and open Rules.
- Add a rule: if a message is from your broker's address, forward to the portfolio's address. Save the rule.
Yahoo Mail and Proton Mail
Automatic forwarding is available only on paid plans of these services. They also send a confirmation email to the portfolio's address, and we forward it to you the same way as for Gmail.
💡 While you set up forwarding, emails without a broker report that arrive at the portfolio's address are forwarded to your account email. This way you receive confirmation emails from your mail service. Forwarding works for 7 days after setup, and after you regenerate the address or change the broker. We don't check the sender of these emails, so open links only if you expect the email.
Step 3. Check the first import
When the first report arrives, the block on the import page shows the date of the last received email. Every email import is listed in Import history as Imported via email.
Possible statuses:
- Awaiting first email: the address is ready, no reports yet. Check that your forwarding rule is active.
- Receiving emails: reports arrive and import automatically. Nothing to do.
- Action required: the report was imported, but some transactions weren't recognized. Click Resolve mapping and match them.
- Failed: the report couldn't be processed. Click View details to see the reason.
We'll notify you in the app and by email after the first successful import, when action is required, when an import fails, and if no reports have arrived for 30 days.
💡 Recognized transactions are added to your portfolio right away. Unrecognized ones wait until you match them in Import history.
Manage email auto-import
All your connections are listed on the Brokerage connections page. To open it, click your profile icon and select Manage brokerage accounts. Open the ⋯ menu on a card to manage it.
- Regenerate: you get a new address, and the old one stops working immediately. Update the forwarding rule in your mailbox.
- Disconnect: reports are no longer imported. Delete the forwarding rule in your mailbox. If you turn email auto-import on again, the address stays the same.
- Change the portfolio's broker: email auto-import stays on, and reports are imported in the new broker's format. Update the forwarding rule to forward the new broker's emails.
- Delete the portfolio: the address stops working. Delete the forwarding rule in your mailbox.
Want to connect your brokerage account instead?
A portfolio can't use email auto-import and a brokerage connection at the same time. If email auto-import is on and you click Connect brokerage account, we'll ask you to choose:
- Keep auto-import: nothing changes.
- Turn off and continue: email auto-import is turned off and the brokerage connection setup opens.
If the portfolio is already connected to a brokerage account, email auto-import is not available for it.
